AI-Specific Incident Categories

AI-Related Academic/Behavioural Incidents

Misuse of AI tools for academic misconduct, or a pupil showing signs of emotional dependency on an AI chatbot/companion.

Action: Handle as a safeguarding conversation, not just a discipline matter — see the Anthropomorphization Crisis section of the AI Safety Hub for warning signs.

Full protocol

AI-Generated Images / Deepfakes of a Pupil

A real child's likeness has been used to generate a fake or sexualised image, including via "nudify" apps.

Action: Treat with the same urgency as real CSAM. Do not view, forward, or store the image. Report to CEOP and IWF immediately.

Full protocol

Sextortion / Blackmail

A pupil is being blackmailed using real or AI-generated intimate images.

Action: This is not the pupil's fault. Do not let them comply with demands. Report to police and CEOP immediately.

Full protocol

Other Online Safety Incidents

Grooming, cyberbullying, disturbing content, or any other online harm affecting a pupil.

Action: Follow your school's existing online safety and safeguarding policy. Full step-by-step protocols are in the Crisis Response guide.

Evidence Preservation for Schools

1

Screenshot Everything

Capture messages, profiles, usernames, timestamps using the device's built-in screenshot tool, before any account is blocked or deleted.

2

Do NOT Delete

Do not delete messages, clear browser history, or uninstall apps. This evidence may be crucial for a police or CEOP investigation.

3

Note the Details

Record the platform name, usernames involved, approximate dates/times, and a factual account of what happened — separate from opinion or interpretation.

4

Preserve Devices

If police or CEOP may be involved, preserve the device as-is. Do not factory reset it or hand it to anyone except the DSL or police.

5

Secure Storage

Store evidence in the school's safeguarding system, not on personal devices. Follow your school's data protection policy for retention.

Post-Incident Review Templates

Structured templates for reviewing what happened, what worked, and what to change — in preparation.
